FAVORITES

My favorite films of each genre

Organized in 1 place, occasionally updated (maybe)

ALL TIME

HUBERT (V.O.)

Heard about the guy who fell from a skyscraper?

On his way down past each floor he kept saying to reassure himself:

"So far so good... So far so good... So far so good..."

How you fall doesn't matter.

It's how you land.

ACTION

PRONOUNCED "NUR-JAH"

I've seen memes pass by now and then saying things like: "why do we always make remakes of good things when they usually turn out worse than the original instead of remaking things with lost potential?".

Well I could use this film and the first one to a lesser extent as a good example of a remake that takes what is seen as a mediocre story and improves upon it in pretty much every aspect.

Ne Zha's story has been changed quite a bit in this movie compared to the original story.

In the (what was originally the most popular depiction of this story) Ne Zha kills Ao Bing and sacrifices himself for his family, but in this film they become friends, and their friendship is really nice.

This film also has a pee joke that I did not dislike?????

Honestly if this film had less fart jokes it would've been perfect for me. but allas, we can't have perfect things in this world.

COMEDY

IS THIS JAZZ?

A wholesome comedy film about Japanese highschool girls?

On paper this sounds like a film I would not care about at all.

But after watching the film it genuinly improved my mood.

The plot is very straightforward, a group of girls want to skip summer school, so they ask their teacher if they could help the school brass ensemble to deliver their food to them.

But during the delivery they fuck up and manage to poison the entire brass ensemble.

They then replace the school's brass band, and from there on it's just non-stop good scene after good scene.

Without spoiling too much, at some point the girls seek money to buy instruments, and they do this by looking for truffels, and what follows during this moment can only be described as one of my favorite moments in all of cinema.

It's a film about finding your passion and making the world a better place.

Oh, and the cast learned to play these instruments for real during the making of this film, and you can notice it.

It's stuff like this that made this not only my favorite comedy movie of all time, but also one of my favorite films of all time.

ANIME

SPACE NASCAR

If you love animation as a medium and you haven't seen Redline, please do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as you can.

And yes, I know anime also counts as a style of animation and is not actually a genre, but to me it is distinct enough to deserve it's own category.

This film was made over a span of 7 years, no CGI, all drawn by hand.

Maybe the plot is not the most impressive thing, and the characters can be a little flat.

But this film OOZES style, and I don't think anybody can deny that.

You could say "style over substance" but for me this has so much style that it almost becomes the substance you know?

Mix this with a great soundtrack and for me it is nearly impossible to dislike.

HORROR

NOT FUNNY AT ALL ACTUALLY

Horror is a hard genre to like for me.

What can be one of the most profound genres in film usually just excists as directorial debuts or cheap slop.

But this is something completly different.

It's hard talking about this film because you NEED to go blind into this, some parts legitimatly surprised me.

I hated it, then I loved it, then hated it again, but at the end it just stuck with me.

This film could not get out of my head.

The commentary it provides might not be the first of it's kind, but the way it brings this forward is done in a way I've never seen done before in a film.

Funniest thing is, this is not really Michael Hanake's first time making a film about these themes lol.

Oh and just to be clear, I'm talking about the original funny games.

There excists and English remake, also made by Michael Hanake, It's practically a shot for shot remake aswell.

But me personally, I thought the performances on the original are just a tad bit better.
